There are many features of the human condition that express our moral disposition. None, however, is more revealing than laughter. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that laughter is the moral measure of a man. Think of someone who rarely laughs, is unresponsive to humour or irony, and takes no pleasure in comic display. Such a person is at odds with both the world and his kind. His refusal to laugh is at the same time a refusal to engage. It signifies that he would rather live in isolation than waste his time on others. Thankfully, such people are not the norm. In most circumstances, people greet each other with a smile, crack a joke and share a laugh. In so doing, they are expressing mutual moral approval… Moreover, what you laugh at suggests the type of person you are.
