Poets are artists in that they reveal what lies on the other side of perception. Where we see the horizon, they see ‘the tangled boughs of Heaven and Ocean, angels of rain and lightning’. They cut through the surface of our world to expose the splendour which is buried deep within. By stretching language to its limits, they show why it is much more than a means of communication. Our ability to speak enables us to go beyond our immediate frontier in the direction of eternity. With words we can peer into the depths of things, we can see what they mean and why they matter.
